CARES (formerly Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service, AECCS) moved to a larger 11,000 square foot facility in June 2003 to offer a higher level of care to our patients. The initial phase of this transition was the remodeling of a portion in the building into a fully functioning hospital. There is a centralized treatment intensive care area for the patients where all levels of care can be provided.

At this time we are in the process of expanding the facility where we are developing and outfitting 9000 sq feet of space. The following are among the many developments that will be completed very soon:

  • Enlarged and more comfortable reception area
  • Exam rooms increased from 3 to 7
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Expansion of complete, in-house laboratory
  • Oncology Treatment Room
  • Internal Medicine Procedures Room
  • Ultrasound Room
  • Surgery expanded from 1 to 2 Suites
  • Dedicated Anesthesia Induction/Surgery Prep area
  • Isolation ward, with windows and video monitoring to main treatment area.

The expansion is very much needed, and welcomed, along with the addition of several services provided by CARES.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. David Puerto, a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, has recently expanded the surgical services to include minimally invasive surgery. This allows surgical procedures to be performed with the use of a camera and fiber optic scope, and specially designed instruments inserted through small incisions. The advantages of these techniques include better visualization of the tissues, reduced postoperative pain, and more rapid recovery from surgery. Arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy are all available for the appropriate surgical candidates. Specialty surgical services are available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Radiology and Ultrasound
Dr. Lisa Ziemer (associate of PetRad), Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Radiology provides comprehensive radiology and ultrasound services. Radiology and Ultrasound services have been expanded to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Oncology
Dr. Jennifer Baez, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Internal Medicine and Oncology). Dr. Baez is a board certified specialist in the area of cancer medicine. She offers the highest level of care for your pet with cancer. The oncology service has been expanded to 3 days per week Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Samantha Murray has joined CARES and is now accepting referrals for medicine consultation and diagnostic evaluation. Dr. Murray also performs advanced diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy of the respiratory and GI tract. She completed her residency training program in veterinary internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Internal medicine services are available Monday-Friday.

These top specialists in their field are available for consultation by appointment or referral by your primary veterinarian. Additional specialty services such as ophthalmology, cardiology and dermatology will be added in the future.
