Dr. Puerto and the emergency veterinary staff provide full coverage for all types of elective and emergency surgical procedures.

   

Minimally invasive surgery

Dr. David Puerto has recently expanded the surgical services to include minimally invasive surgery. This allows surgical procedures to be performed with the use of a camera and fiber optic scope, and specially designed instruments inserted through small incisions. The advantages of these techniques include better visualization of the tissues, reduced postoperative pain, and more rapid recovery from surgery. arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy are all available for the appropriate surgical candidates. Specialty surgical services are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

 

Laparoscopic liver biopsy is an alternative to open surgery for diagnosis of diseases of the liver.

Arthroscopy of the elbow and other joints can be performed to treat a number of joint diseases.

Oncology Service

Dr. Baez, Diplomate of the American College of Internal Medicine, is a specialists in oncology. She offers the highest level of care for your pet with cancer. The oncology service has been expanded to 3 days per week Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Dr. Lisa Ziemer (associate of PetRad), Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology provides comprehensive radiology and ultrasound services. Radiology and Ultrasound services have been expanded to Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

 

Internal Medicine Service
Dr. Samantha Murray has joined CARES and is now accepting referrals for medicine consultation and diagnostic evaluation. Dr. Murray also performs advanced diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy of the respiratory and GI tract. She completed her residency training program in veterinary internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Internal medicine services are available Monday-Friday.

Ophthalmology Service
Dr. Bob Peiffer, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology provides his expertise in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye. Some common
problems that are treated include glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease, and conjunctivitis. He also performs CERF eye certification exams for breeding evaluation or puppy certification. He is available for referral appointments on Thursday.

Client Supportive Services
Individuals and families are welcome to join the Cares Support Group for clients that desire emotional support during treatment of their sick pet or for the loss of a pet treated at CARES. The Support group meets from 6pm to 7pm. (Clients must call weekly to reserve their space). CARES also provides consultation appointments either by phone or in person for clients who need assistance deciding whether they could benefit from supportive services and which modality would best suit them. The services are provided by a licensed clinical social worker. CARES recognizes and supports the human-animal bond and provides these services at no cost to clients of CARES. Outside referrals are also accepted and services are available at a reduced rate. Please contact the hospital for more information on how to get started.
