CARES is proud to offer comprehensive advanced surgical treatments for our patients. We strive to provide a compasssionate, team-oriented approach to caring for our patients. The surgical team consists of a surgeon, a scrub nurse, anesthesia nurse, and surgical floater nurse. Our patients are intensely monitored and cared for during their surgical procedure and during their recovery in the hospital. We work closely with the other specialists and emergency clinicians to provide the highest level of treatment possible for your pet.

We perform exploratory abdominal and thoracic surgery for a variety of medical conditions. Abdominal surgery includes, but is not limited to surgery of the liver, splenic, urogenital and gastrointestinal systems. Thoracic surgery includes surgery of the lungs, heart, mediastinum and chest wall.

We collaborate with the oncology service for surgical treatment of cancer. Many cancers require aggressive surgical resection for best results. Our radiology service uses ultrasound, radiographs (x-rays) and CT imaging to provide much needed information about the extent of disease so that the best treatment can be selected.

Orthopedic conditions in pets are extremely common. CARES is equipped to handle orthopedic problems in all sizes of dogs and cats from the small Chihuahuas to Great Danes. This includes surgery for fractures, cranial cruciate ruptures, patellar luxations, growth deformities, hip dysplasia and many other conditions. Total joint replacement is also available for dogs with severe hip dysplasia.

Cranial cruciate disease is our most common orthopedic complaint. This is a ligament rupture in dogs similar to a torn ACL in the human knee. We offer traditional open stabilization techniques, and minimally invasive arthroscopic assisted repairs. There are many methods for treatment of cranial cruciate ruptures. The techniques that are performed at CARES include lateral suture stabilization, tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), and the Arthrex Tightrope® cruciate repair.

Fractures secondary to trauma can be treated with internal fixation (pins, wire, plates and screws) and external fixation. These techniques are very similar to those that are used in humans. Neurologic patients with spinal disease due to disk disease, tumors, and traumatic injuries are also treated by our surgeons.. Many of these patients also require advanced imaging such as CT or MRI. CT is readily available at CARES through our radiology service and if an MRI is needed, we can facilitate this imaging nearby.

Patient comfort and early return to function are very important to us. We routinely perform minimally invasive surgery at CARES and have a very active program. Minimally invasive surgery has been shown to have the advantages of decreased post-operative pain, reduced stress, reduced infections, shorter hospital stays, and more rapid recovery. Rigid endoscopic equipment provides excellent magnification and tissue detail. Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy is performed for exploration of the abdomen and chest, biopsies, stone and mass removal. Arthroscopy is minimally invasive joint surgery. We are able to treat cruciate ligament disease, and developmental diseases such as elbow dysplasia, OCD of the shoulder and elbow, and other diseases arthroscopically.

We recommend the American College of Veterinary Surgeons website for more information about board certified veterinary surgeons general information about many surgical diseases and their treatment.

We look forward to providing excellent care for all your pet’s needs at CARES. If you have any further questions about our surgical services, please feel free to contact our team at CARES.
